John played from 1973 right through to 2007 for the Club, encompassing some of the most successful years in the Club’s history.
A skilful, intelligent hooker, he commanded the greatest respect from teammates and opposition alike, in whichever team he played. John was admired by many and was instrumental in helping to bring out the best in players’ abilities.
He was always happy to pass on advice and the benefit of his vast experience as one of the best hookers ever to wear the navy blue, claret and old gold hoops of Edwardian FC.
Such was his fitness, he continued playing well into his 50’s. One of his greatest personal achievements was playing first XV rugby with his son David at the age of 50!
John was a very popular man who never had a bad word for anybody and everyone with whom he played or had the pleasure of meeting him were enriched by the privilege.
His knowledge of the game, his sense of humour and his friendship will be greatly missed by his many friends at the Memorial Ground.
John’s funeral takes place at St. Alphege Church, Solihull at 12 Noon on Monday 1st March. Flowers or donations (payable to Padstow Lifeboat) should be sent to Funeral Directors Thomas Bragg & Sons, 562, Stratford Road, Shirley, Solihull B90 4AY.

"Very sad to hear this news. Like so many people, that I'm sure will leave messages on this board, I was fortunate to play with John. Most of those games were at 2nd and 3rd team level where his skills and knowledge of the game were always a pleasure to see. His endless encouragement for junior players is something I will never forget. My heartfelt condolences go to his family"
Warwick Oakey (Wozza) "A wonderful player and a wonderful man. Competitive to the last but gracious in defeat and victory. He always had words of encouragement and certainly gave me confidence in the games we played together. He will be greatly missed by us all. My most heartfelt sympathy goes to his family"
"John was not only a fantastic, fearless, hard player but a real top guy and a pleasure to call a team mate. I was fortunate to captain Ed's 2nd team in the late 90's and John was a regular member of the team. The advice he offered was always spot on and we enjoyed many a pint after the game win or lose. My condolences go to Kate, David and Elizabeth"
